Cedar trees can take over your property in a short period of time
choking out hardwood trees by overcrowding and blocking out light and
catching a percentage of rainfall in their thick canopies. In addition to
the impenetrable thickets cedar trees produce, the shallow root systems
can compete for valuable sub-surface moisture and there is still some
debate about whether or not thick tracts of cedar can contribute to
stalling springs and seeps. Our own observations, over many years,
shows us that removing a percentage of cedar in the right locations can
benefit the overall healthy of your property.
The extra rainfall that can reach the ground benefits your grasses and
other trees and shrubs.
We do not subscribe to the "all cedar trees are bad", however. Large,
mature cedar trees provide nesting material for many animals. Migratory
and native birds (including the endangered Warbler), use cedar bark for
nesting material. Cedars also provide cover and nutrition for wildlife and
can help reduce erosion on slopes and decomposing cedar needles
help to replenish shallow hill country soils.
Our approach to Cedar Clearing is low-impact and environmentally
sensitive with an eye for responsible clearing. We like trees and will
treat your property as if it was our own while helping to "Open Up Your
Land to Enjoyment."
